The design behind the Republican voucher plans: Medicare and Education

Appeared in  the “Your View” op-ed column in the Allentown Morning Call on Friday, July 1, 2011 John Locke wrote that “a long train of abuses, prevarications, and artifices, all tending the same way, make the design visible to the people” Two voucher proposals, the Ryan Medicare plan in Washington and the Piccola education voucher plan in Harrisburg, show us the real design of the Republican Party today— to help the very rich by harming working people. Both proposals claim to address real problems. Congressman Ryan’s plan is meant to deal with the long term costs of Medicare. State Senator Piccola’s plan supposedly helps low-income kids who attend failing schools. However, the proposals will not meet those goals. The Medicare plan does nothing to reduce the costs of senior health care. Indeed, it repeals the Affordable Care Act which would reduce those costs by $500 billion in the first ten… Continue reading

Pennsylvanians thank Senator Casey for standing up for Medicare

On Thursday, June 2nd, about 65 Philadelphians brought together by Penn ACTION, Action United, the Alliance for Retired Americans and SEIU gathered with residents of the Philadelphia Senior Center to personally thank Senator Casey for his vote against the Ryan budget bill that would change both change Medicare as we know it to a voucher system, which would double or possibly triple health insurance costs for seniors and cripple Medicaid. In the 24 hours leading up to the event, we received 100 letters from members of Penn ACTION thanking Senator Casey for supporting Medicare and Medicaid. These letters came from people who are on Medicare, people in their 50s looking forward to receiving Medicare, and even those in their 30s who are still a long way from receiving the benefits. The told many stories: about how Medicare helps people their healthcare bills so they can afford other goods; about how… Continue reading

HCAN Activists Disrupt Aetna Annual Meeting Call Aetna to account for “hypocrisy” about the Affordable Care Act

Penn ACTION dropped by Aetna’s Annual Meeting in Philadelphia to ask why the company says it is supporting the Affordable Care Act while it funnels millions of dollars of secret contributions to the Chamber of Commerce, which ran ads against the Affordable Care Act and members of Congress who supported it.  Don’t miss the great press coverage, which came from outlets all over the world. You can see coverage from the Wall Street Journal, the Philadelphia Inquirer, the Hartford Courant, Bloomberg and the AP here.  Here’s our press release describing the event: The Chairman and CEO of Aetna Insurance, Mark Bertolini, was telling attendees at the annual meeting that his company was working hard to implement the Affordable Care Act (ACA) when 8 protestors burst into the room shouting “We Need Health Care; Aetna’s Not Fair.” Continue reading

Media Coverage of Penn ACTION at Aetna’s Annual Meeting in Philadelphia

Coverage in the Wall St. Journal: Aetna Shareholder Meeting Halted By Protesters By Dinah Wisenberg Brin Of  DOW JONES NEWSWIRES PHILADELPHIA (Dow Jones)–Aetna Inc.’s (AET) annual shareholder meeting was halted temporarily when a group of protesters pushed through the doors to complain that the health insurance industry was trying to undermine the federal government’s health-care reform. The meeting resumed about 10 minutes later, and no arrests were made; however, the incident shows how the health-care overhaul approved last year by the federal government remains a heated issue. Aetna’s meeting had just gotten underway, and Chairman and Chief Executive Mark Bertolini was speaking to shareholders, when protesters shouting and carrying signs and bullhorns burst through the doors of the Le Meriden hotel meeting room. Aetna security whisked Bertolini out a side door, while other security people tried to restrain protesters. After the meeting, Bertolini said a protester had charged toward him.… Continue reading

Bucks County constituents tell Rep. Fitzpatrick that they don’t want to be worked to death

A longtime professor of literature at Bucks County Community College, Chris Bursk, knows that not every story has a happy ending. Much as the 68-year-old teacher loves his job, Bursk isn’t entirely thrilled at the prospect of working till age 80. “I’d like to retire. But I don’t think I could afford it,” he said. His students’ future seems bleaker still, Bursk said. “So many worry about the world they will inherit and how they will get by,” he said. That’s an excerpt from the Bucks County Courier Times coverage of Penn ACTION’s Work ’till You Die event at the office of Cong. Mike Fitzpatrick (PA-08).   The world Chris Bursk’s students will inherit will be a lot harder for them if the Ryan/Fitzpatrick plan to destroy Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security is made law.  To help prevent that from happening, the Save Social Security Coalition, which is led in Pennsylvania… Continue reading

Penn Action volunteer responds to Rep. Fitzpatrick’s attack

As you know, in March, the Congressman fled from constituents standing the legally mandated distance from his office to celebrate the anniversary of the passage of the Affordable Care Act.  Shortly after that, a story about his avoidance of us ran in the Bucks County Courier Times.  In response, his office placed a guest opinion attacking Penn Action and volunteer, Barbara Stakes.  Barb is a Bucks County resident and tireless advocate for health care justice.   She’s told her story countless times at events to educate the public about the Affordable Care Act.   She continues to fight to protect it from defunding at the hands of the new Congress.  Her response to the Congressman’s attack ran in the Courier on April 25.  You can read it here.  From Barb’s guest opinion: In October, I qualified for the PA Fair Care Highmark Blue Shield program made possible by the ACA’s… Continue reading

Congressman Fitzpatrick’s diversionary tactics

One of the most effective speakers of our citizen’s rally in Harrisburg was Barb Stakes of Bucks County. Look for her in the video. For years, she went without health insurance because of a pre-existing condition. The cheapest insurance offered to her would have cost $10,000 a year. Now, because of the ACA, she has good health insurance for $283 a month. The day after we were in Harrisburg,  our Program Director, Robin Stelly, along with Barb Stakes and other activists demonstrated outside the office of Congressman Mike Fitzpatrick, who voted to repeal the ACA. Congressman Fitzpatrick, to our disappointment, saw us but got in his car and drove away. When a video of his doing so appeared on the website of the papers and on youtube, the Congressman, had his district director write an op-ed attacking Robin and Barb. Congressman Fitzpatrick attacked us for being funded by George Soros.… Continue reading

Citizen’s hearing and rally celebrates the anniversary of the signing of the Affordable Care Act

Harrisburg, PA (March 23, 2011) — While members of Congress convened in Pennsylvania’s State Capitol to consider a plan to repeal the Affordable Care Act, real Pennsylvanians held a “consumers’ hearing” in the Rotunda to tell the true story about the landmark law. Consumers testified to the benefits of the Affordable Care Act — from ending preexisting conditions and other abusive insurance practice to covering preventative care services for seniors to expanding access to quality, affordable health insurance for small businesses and individuals. “My husband and I were able to put our 24-year-old son back on our family’s health insurance plan because of the provision in the Affordable Care Act that allows us to do so,” said Theresa BrownGold, one of the consumers to testify. The “consumers’ hearing” took place while the U.S. House Committee on Energy and Commerce held a field hearing at the State Capitol focused on repealing… Continue reading

March 23 Citizen’s Hearing and Rally for Health Care Reform

On the anniversary of President Obama’s signing of the Affordable Care Act, March 23,, the House Energy and Commerce Committee is coming Harrisburg on March 23 to take testimony about why it should be repealed. Governor Corbett is scheduled to testify. Some corporate CEOs are scheduled to testify. Some Republican state legislators are scheduled to testify. You haven’t been invited to testify. Nor have any of the people of Pennsylvania who will benefit so much from health care reform. But we intend to be heard. CITIZEN’S HEARING AND RALLY FOR THE AFFORDABLE CARE ACT The Capitol         Harrisburg PA, March 23, 2011          10:30 am From Wisconsin to Washington, DC, right wing extremists are trying to roll back the programs, policies, and protections that support working people and the middle class in America. The attack on the Affordable Care Act is just one more example. On March 23, the right… Continue reading
