I’ve said it before and will undoubtedly say it again: nothing is more important to the future of politics in Pennsylvania than re-taking the State Senate. If you gave me a choice between winning the Governor’s office next year and taking the Senate back, I’d choose the latter just. A Senate controlled by a state Republican party that has turned sharply to the right has been the biggest barrier to the progressive initiatives Governor Rendell has put forward on health care, education, energy and the environment. <\/span><\/p>\n

When we re-take the Senate it will be because we capture the Democratic trending seats in SEPA. They will be ours sooner or later. We have to work to make sure it is sooner rather than later. <\/span><\/p>\n

Rob Wonderling resigned as the 24th<\/sup> district Senator to become the Executive Director of the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce. Anne Scheuring is the Democratic candidate and is running against an undistinguished Republican State Representatives Bob Mensch. <\/span><\/p>\n

This district, which includes parts of Bucks, Montgomery, Lehigh and Northampton is certainly winnable. It is the SEPA district with the most favorable registration for Democrats, with a Republican advantage of only 900. Like most areas SEPA, the area is trending Democratic. Rendell and Casey won big in the district and President Obama got more than 55% of the vote. <\/span><\/p>\n

Anne Scheuring has been endorsed by Governor Rendell, AFLCIO, SEIU, PASNAP, Planned Parenthood, and a lot of other unions. While Mensch is an office holder, members of the Pennsylvania General Assembly are not exactly held in high esteem right now. So she has a chance to win this. And even if she just comes close, the election is just to fill out Wonderling’s term. So the seat is up again next year and a strong showing by Anne will definitely put the seat into play next year. <\/span><\/p>\n

Since this is a special election, turnout is the key and that depends more than anything else on the effort of volunteers to get voters to the polls<\/strong>. <\/span><\/p>\n
