I don\u2019t want to leave a system for you.&#8217; And I think that is fundamentally unfair.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Seniors held up bars of soap and shouted, &#8220;Come clean Toomey!&#8221; Toomey came under criticism last month when he responded to a question at a news conference saying, &#8220;<\/span><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/wonkroom.thinkprogress.org\/2010\/08\/24\/toomey-never-privatize\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">I&#8217;ve never said I favored privatizing Social Security<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">,&#8221; and then said his reforms would include the creation of &#8220;personal accounts,&#8221; which critics say is the same as privatization. Nobel prize winning economist Paul Krugman consequently called Toomey&#8217;s explanation <\/span><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/krugman.blogs.nytimes.com\/2010\/08\/24\/orwell-and-social-security\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Orwellian doublespeak<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><object classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" width=\"640\" height=\"385\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/IjqEfhr9mRc?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><\/object><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">&#8220;Toomey has a far-right extremist position on Social Security,&#8221;\u00a0said Marc Stier, Executive Director of Penn ACTION, the group that organized the event. &#8220;He wants to implement Bush&#8217;s old plan to gamble Social Security away on Wall Street. He is not being transparent about this goal to fundamentally restructure a program which currently benefits millions in Pennsylvania.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Nearly one in five Pennsylvania residents receives Social Security benefits, lifting 950,000 people out of poverty in the state. My brother, sister, and mother benefited from the survivor&#8217;s benefits that Social Security pays&#8230;&#8221; said Richard Pasquier, a lawyer for a Fortune 500 corporation. &#8220;When I was twelve I had benefits that took me all the way through college. It currently has a huge surplus,&#8221; said\u00a0John Meyerson, political director of the United Food and Commercial Workers, Local 1776 who also spoke at the rally. &#8220;Social Security is a promise that the government has made to working Americans and it must be kept.
